Some sorrow and a lot of joy: January-March 2017

Enter 2017!

After we recovered from all of our various illnesses, we threw (although a little late) our New Year's Eve party.  We celebrated with Italy's time zone.  Here's us with the Colosseum and a few good friends.

Gregory won best dressed Italian and took home a carton of Gelato.

Ira's Birthday!

Here we are celebrating at the Bomber Restaurant

Women's March Ann Arbor

January 21st

Kids unite!  Ira's poster: Be Nice
Eliot's: I try to use Nice words. The President should too.
Other kid: Don't say Mean stuff!  Joy and Love, (name)

I wanted to write something that summed up my feelings that just because we now have a President that objectifies women, it doesn't mean it's any more acceptable.

One of my favorite moments was when Esther and Noelle latched onto each other and held hands, and stayed that way for quite a while.  Reflects Shelby's poster: Stronger Together, and the general feeling of love and positivity that was present at the march.  I don't know what it was like in other places, but here in Ann Arbor, it was such a happy day, in a united in the face of opposition kind of way.

The Barneys

The only thing that could've made the march better was a rare sighting of one of my favorite reoccurring graffiti guys: Stikman.  And then there he was.

Ira's calendar reflects the day well.  The day of the inauguration, just the day before was rainy and dreary (despite Trump's claims).  Then there we were the very next day, in the middle of Winter, in what felt like a perfect Spring day.  Smiling happy faces, and a sign that says Benis (Be nice.  haha!)

Pool Time

January also began our 9 month habit of getting to the pool weekly.  Here the kids are in pj's, post swim.

Ira's Birthday Party

Celebrated a couple weeks after the actual b-day
Yet another Ninjago cake.  This time, Ira chose the Golden Ninja.

We had an obstacle course lead by Anthony, Silly String Battle, and made ninja masks.

Not that you can really see anyone's face, but I think we've got top: Andrew, Ira, Mazzy, Edison. Bottom: Liam, Duncan, Eliot

Sad News:

It was the day of Ira's birthday party, that I had a miscarriage.  It was a tragedy, but I felt very helped throughout the entire process.  Before things started looking bad about a week earlier, I had this strong feeling that miscarriage might be better than losing a newborn (not that this is how everyone would feel).  Then I had disconcerting symptoms for a week, in which time I felt like I knew what was coming.  At the doctors office, they found the baby measuring a week small, but were otherwise reassuring.  But I felt in my gut that I really shouldn't get my hopes up.  Anthony wasn't home when I started cramping.  When I called, a friend (Alex) came within minutes to swoop away the kids.  The cramping was pretty intense, and had been building up for some time, but everything was over just minutes after the children left.  I was pale and a little shaky.  Slept for 2 solid hours, then felt fine enough to throw a ninja party.  It was a sad loss and major disappointment, but I felt oddly blessed during the entire ordeal.  I was about 9 weeks along.

Flowers sent to comfort from Grandma and Grandpa Quinn
The boys were pretty bummed but seemed to cope just fine.
A couple good friends brought meals which helped with the time burden of extra doctor's appointments.

Anthony started the very much appreciated hobby of making Sour Dough bread.  He worked from home for a week, just so he could "birth" the yeast.

Ira staying up past his bedtime, probably to look at books.

Friends moving away. We miss you Boles!

Temple with my amazing Primary presidency: Nyoka, Brittany, and Chelci

I was able to help out with my second Felt birth!  This family is incredible.  I wasn't as effective of a doula this time around, since I had really lame tendinitis, but I was able to help out a sort of confused nurse through hip squeezes.

First day of Spring egg blance

The day Eliot learned not to run on cement with his hands in his pockets.  I write this about 9 months later, and you can still feel the bump there.

Ellsworth Siblings (plus one sib in-law) home to celebrate

Mom and Dad's 50th Anniversary!

Lynne and I were able to fly together from Detroit, and got our seats changed to sit next to each other.

Haha!  My face.

My Mom even packed us sack lunches to eat on the way home from the airport.
It was all like a big childhood flashback.

Listening to a story Lynne was telling.  I realized on this trip, that it's an Ellsworth trait to be a fantastic audience member.
